How important is the ratio between follow and no-follow links?

It is important to keep in mind that even a huge volume of follow links can still result in a low PR. In other words, even though follow links influence ratings much better than no-follow ones, we recommend staying away from them unless it's part of a specific strategy that you're deploying in order to get more organic traffic.

As a link building strategy, follow and no-follow links have a different impact on your site's rankings. Although most of the time we assume that follow links affect your site's rankings more than no-follow ones, this is not always true. It all depends on the type of links you are deploying and what you want to achieve with them.

The main goal is always the same: earn organic (natural) links to your site. Even though follow links influence ratings much better than no-follow ones, it's of great importance to keep in mind that both of these links are a natural part of the Web.
